Project Overview
The Aboriginal Medical Service is a multi-functional non-for-profit organisation providing culturally appropriate health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in central NSW.
Works involved internal demolition and strip out of the existing fit out, finishes and fixtures; internal fit out of the building including clinical rooms, treatment facilities, staff and managerial facilities. Refurbishments upgrades and restoration to all external sash windows and brickwork, including the replacement of the aging roof. Holistic new services systems were required for the building including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic reticulation and fire protection systems.
Special consideration has been given throughout the design and construction phases to the heritage significance of the Building. The building is the former Redfern Telephone Exchange, designed by the NSW Government Architect’s office of Walter Liberty Vernon in 1908 and constructed in 1913 in a Federation era Victorian Italianate style which complemented the grand presentation of the adjacent Redfern Post Office. It was decommissioned in 1974.
