Grass-roots initiative provides fresh food options for Wogyala community.

Wogyala Community Farm

Partnering with Manungurra Aboriginal Corporation, Ray was thrilled to bring to life the Wogyala Community Farm. to provide fresh food options for the community, hands-on education for children in food and nutrition, reduce the reliance on food transported into the region at a high cost, and create economic and job opportunities in the bush where there are none.

The farm replaces an old water tank and stand, dismantled to make way for the vegie garden. Weeding and ground clearing work was undertaken and plumbing and irrigation were laid to support the site. Shade sail was installed along the fence line to help secure the site from animals and provide much-needed shade to the plants during the hottest parts of the day.

We were engaged to project manage the initiative and provide skills and training to local Indigenous people. Five new jobs were created for local Indigenous people with many more residents and children taking an interest in the future of the garden.

The community farm has since supplied food to the nearby mine site and the Tennant Creek IGA Supermarket, making this garden a commercially sustainable project. This model for a commercially sustainable community garden can now be replicated across northern Australia. Commercial benefit from the project can be re-invested in community development projects including employment, housing, and repairs and maintenance.
